About This Quote

The classic metaphor in this quote is that of two demons who are in competition for the throne of hell. One demon (or devil) is called "Sloth," and the other demon (or devil) is named "Vanity." Sloth, who is usually depicted as being very fat, is always trying to have the other demon, Vanity, get tired. Sloth is always trying to slow him down or hold him back. When Sloth does that, Vanity becomes angry, and he gets even more impatient. However, if Sloth tires Vanity out too much, he will run away.

He will escape from Hell. So Sloth has to keep his slothiness under control, otherwise he will lose his way to Heaven.
